It was on June 19th 2008. The day before, i had gone to coimbatore with my brother to collect the final mark sheets and certificates. We had just reached home that morning. I wanted some sleep then, so i was lying on the bed, trying to get some sleep. At around 6:30 am, my parents were discussing (pretending as if they were seriously discussing) about matching of stars. I got suspicious. I got up from bed and asked them what they are discussing about in a very angry tone. They said they are discussing about fixing a date for my thatha's kanagabishegam. I knew it was not true.
I said "Pls tell the truth". Appa replied "Yes, we are checking the match of stars for you and a boy. He is a doctor in US. They are coming to India, and will visit us to see you".
That moment, i was on the top of fear, tension and anger. "I do not want to marry anyone, I have just finished college."
"They will just see you now, but wedding will be after 1 or 1.5 yrs"
"No"
"What no"
I saw our calendar on which there was Vinayagar's photo, prayed to him for a minute and blurted out, "If you want me to marry some one, get me married to some one i like"
Amma asked "Who is that"
"Prem.. I will marry Prem only, i like him only"
My part was over. I lost all the rights to be angry or shout or even raise my voice.
The first reaction on my mother's face was a smile. I still don't know why. Following that was quarells, fights and tears. My father even slapped me and bet me with a water bottle. They said they will call to prem and ask about this. But then they didn't.
I did not dare to take my mobile to msg prem to inform what was happening. When no one noticed i sent him a msg "I told my parents about our matter. Don't worry. Almost success. But don't msg me until i msg back"
2 or 3 days passed. They didn't talk about it and the situation ameliorted. Appa said "We will speak about this after 6 months, until then don't have any thoughts about this and don't speak to him about this". I said ok.
In the company, they had arranged a visit for our parents. I was extremely tensed though i managed to smile. When it comes to fear, no one can beat me. I get frightened for silly things. I signaled prem to come and speak to my parents. My mom responded to him, father didnt speak to him. At home, amma said, he looked good. There was little happiness in me.
During navarathri, my parents asked me to invite prem to our home, so that they can see his behavior, attitude and all. He came in a nice dress, spoke about various things, saw our family albums, had lunch. amma said "We want gayathri to get married soon". He replied "Why so, she has just finished college. Let her work for some time". It was a very formal conversation and then he left.
That evening, kishore got semester reuslts and he passed too. So they were all happy without complaining on me. Appa said "Tell to prem about kishore's result" and gave a proud smile. As if he got state first.
One day, i told "Prem told that he wants to marry me". Then it was some day in Jan-09. Prem was in company. They asked him to come home again. Appa was really angry about his coming home.
He came and sat on the sofa. There was full silence. No body spoke out. Appa started "You told something to my daughter ?"
"Yes. I want to marry her and live with her happily. I am a good boy, have a good job, good family. What is the problem? " He told with such confidence in his tone.
My parents fell for it. "Ok, i have no problems in giving my girl to you, but we need to face our relatives and society. We had brought her up very decently and she was an example for many." He was speaking some irrelevant stuff there.
Amma said "Do you know that age difference between bride and groom should be atleast 2 years. You are just 2 months elder to her"
Prem said "All these silly rules are defined by us only. Age is not at all a matter. Anyway you are going to marry her to some boy in US or canada. Now let me be the boy " They couldn't oppose. They said some horoscope match, this and that. He accepted for that condition. I shed few tears for no reason then.
Following that, my parents went to a computer horoscope matching shop and checked our match. I was praying to God as to when i will get a call from them with good news. I was very tensed. The result came that 9 / 10 were matching. :)
It was all set then. It was one of my happiest moments. :)
